Eid home rush: 25km tailback on east of Bangabandhu Bridge

A 25km long tailback was created on the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail highway today (July 8, 2022) following huge pressure of vehicles on both sides of the bridge ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The highway first witnessed the 18-km tailback starting from the eastern end of the bridge to Rosulpur in Tangail this morning (July 8, 2022) but the tailback later increased for seven more kilometers till Ashekpur Bypass in the district, reports our Tangail correspondent.

While visiting the highway around 8am, this correspondent found that vehicles were moving slowly.

Police and commuters said increased number of vehicles on the highway due to Eid vacation has led to traffic congestion.

Excessive vehicular pressure, and some vehicles, which went out of order at various places including the bridge, hampered the toll collection occasionally, sources at the traffic control room of Bangabandhu Bridge told this correspondent.

Kader Mia, a Gaibandha-bound bus passenger at 8:30am said he left Dhaka at 11 pm yesterday and is now stuck at Elanga. "I don't know when I'll be able to cross the bridge and get home".

"I couldn't cross this road without suffering on any Eid," he added.

Besides, Dhaka-bound vehicles-- bypassing the Bhunapur Link Road--has led to heavy traffic congestion on the entire link road from Gol Chattar on the eastern end of the bridge.

Rokon, a driver of the Dhaka -bound bus from Rangpur, told Rhe Daily Star that he left Rangpur at 4 pm yesterday and was stuck at the eastern end of the Bangabandhu Bridge at 8 am today. "I don't know when you will reach Dhaka.

Ataur Rahman, in-charge of the Elanga Highway Police Outpost, told The Daily Star at 8:30 am, "Hopefully, the situation will improve as the day progresses.
