Patuakhali gang-rape: Nahid demands arrest within 24 hrs, BNP assures support

National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam today demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the gang rape of a 12th grader in Patuakhali's Dumki upazila.

During a press briefing at a hospital, the former adviser also expressed concern over the political and social security of families of martyrs from the July movement.

He urged the government to ensure law and order and fair investigation in the case.

Nahid also warned that if the remaining accused were not arrested by 24 hours and the investigation was not conducted properly, street demonstrations would be announced.

NCP Joint Convener Mujahidul Islam Shahin, Senior Joint Secretary Tasnim Jara, and other party leaders were also present.

Meanwhile, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has assured full support to the victim.

Following his instructions, BNP central member Hasan Al Mamun visited the victim at Patuakhali Medical College Hospital at 2:00pm. He spoke with the victim's family and inquired about her medical treatment and legal proceedings.

Tarique Rahman personally spoke with the victim and her family over the phone, assuring them of the BNP's legal and other necessary support.

BNP leaders Mushtaq Ahmed Pinu, Advocate Mojibur Rahman Toton, and other party members were present.

The 18-year-old victim was the daughter of a man killed in police firing during the July uprising. A case was filed in connection with the gang-rape with Dumki Police Station yesterday.

According to the details of the case, the victim was on her way to her maternal grandparents' house after visiting her father's grave when she was attacked near the Munshibari area around 7:30pm on March 18.

Suspect Sakib Munshi, 19, and his associates Sifat Munshi, 20, and Imran Munshi, 19, allegedly forcibly took her to a secluded area where they took turns in raping her.

The suspects also allegedly took photos of the victim and threatened to spread them online if she reported the incident.

Sakib Munshi has already been sent to jail after his arrest.

Md Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Dumki Police Station, said that efforts are underway to apprehend the other accused.

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre of Patuakhali Medical College Hospital.
