New party launch: Uprising leaders want rally of 3 lakh people

Participants of the July uprising are aiming for a massive turnout of 3 lakh people on Manik Mia Avenue this Friday for the official launching of their political party.
Members of the preparation committee, comprising over a hundred leaders from the Nagorik Committee and the Students Against Discrimination, are now contacting their grassroots units to achieve their target gathering.
Meanwhile, the new student body helmed by the coordinators of the Students Against Discrimination is set to be launched at Dhaka University's Madhur Canteen at 3:00pm today, according to a press release.
In order to ensure a large gathering at the new political party launch event, the preparatory committee held its second meeting at the central office of the Nagorik Committee in the capital's Banglamotor to distribute different tasks.
Four subcommittees -- Discipline, Media, Decoration, and Logistics -- were formed at the meeting.
The meeting also discussed the oath-taking for the members of the party's convening committee.
However, some members of the preparatory committee mentioned the difficulties in taking an oath in such a huge gathering, at least three meeting participants told The Daily Star, requesting anonymity.
The meeting also discussed the size of the convening committee, which is set to be unveiled on Friday.
"Today's meeting was held to distribute different tasks to the subcommittees. We are aiming to gather at least 3 lakh people," a top leader of the Nagorik Committee told The Daily Star.
A key coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination, Nahid Islam, resigned from the advisory council of the interim government yesterday and is almost certain to be the convener of the new party.
Akhter Hossen is likely to be appointed as the party's member secretary, with Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah possibly assuming the roles of chief organiser and spokesperson, respectively.
STUDENT BODY LAUNCH

Abu Baker Majumdar, a fourth-year student of the geology department at Dhaka University, and a key coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination, is almost certain to be the convener.
The platform's Office Secretary, Zahid Ahsan, is likely to be the member secretary of the central committee.
