Youth arrested over emailing foreign institutions to cancel Bangladeshi students' admissions

The cyber crime team under the Counter Terrorism Unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police yesterday arrested a 21-year-old youth for allegedly running a cyber campaign aimed at cancelling the admissions of Bangladeshi students who have applied to foreign universities, including those in the US.

The accused, Abdullah Al Junayed, 21, was held from the Thanthania area of Bogura Sadar with the help of local police, said Inspector Sanjoy Kumar Sinha, in-charge of the Cyber Crime Unit of CMP.

According to CMP, the accused operated a Facebook page titled "Drake for a reason," where he posted false and defamatory content against students who had secured foreign scholarships.

A press release issued by the CMP CTU unit said a complaint was lodged by an HSC student who had secured a scholarship at a US college. The college on February 12 later cancelled his scholarship following an email to the institution. The authorities informed the student that he had allegedly submitted false documents during his application.

During the investigation, police found that Junayed had illegally accessed and hacked data stored on the victim's laptop. He published significant portions of the victim's written essays on the Facebook page, falsely claiming them to be fake and fabricated. Additionally, he unlawfully posted the victim's photo, asking the victim to contact him to extort money.

CMP officials said the accused had threatened to expose 300–400 more students and lodge complaints with foreign embassies to block their visas. He also posted threats online, stating that he would "bring the entire country to tears".

Police fear that several students have already faced serious consequences due to his reckless actions, the statement added.

A case has been lodged with Khulshi Police Station in this regard.
