Man arrested for spreading ‘defamatory’ remarks against Dr Moyeen Uddin
A team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested a man in the capital today in connection with spreading "defamatory" remarks about Md Moyeen Uddin, the first doctor in the country to die of Covid-19 on April 15.
HM Riazul Abir, 31, who is from Bakerganj upazila of Barishal, was arrested in Dhaka's Badda area, said Kamrul Ahsan, additional superintendent (cyber police unit) of CID.
A mobile phone has been seized from the man's possession and legal case against him is underway, he said.
According to CID official Kamrul Ahsan, the arrest was made following complaints from some doctors that a vested quarter was spreading "defamatory" comments against the late Dr Moyeen in social media.
The doctors also urged police to take action against the culprits involved in spreading such messages.
Dr Moyeen Uddin, who was assistant professor at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH), tested positive for coronavirus on April 5 and died at the intensive care unit of the capital's Kurmitola General Hospital on April 15.
