Jamaat calls hartal for Sunday

The Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday announced it will hold a gayebana janaza for its assistant secretary general, war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah today and enforce a countrywide shutdown on Sunday.
Before the execution, it issued a statement, in which it threatened the government with dire consequences if Quader Mollah was executed.
“The government and the Awami League will have to pay for every single drop of blood if Abdul Quader Mollah is killed,” acting Jamaat ameer Moqbul Ahmad said in the statement issued last night.
He also called upon the people of the country and the international community to wage a peaceful movement in a democratic way against what he said was the government’s conspiracy of political killing.
The Awami League will have to stand in the dock in future for the so-called farce in the name of justice, Moqbul added.
The International Crimes Tribunal law, under which the Jamaat leader was tried, is controversial and has been questioned locally and internationally, he alleged.
The government is trying to “divert the movement waged against its move for one-party election by executing Mollah,” the statement says.
Meanwhile, Jamaat issued another statement, it claimed to be of Quader Mollah, in which he called upon activists of the Islamic movement not to engage in destructive activities after his execution.
