‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight' with Barguna cops

4 policemen injured; 6 detained

An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Amtali upazila of Barguna early today.

Four police personnel also suffered injuries during the incident that took place at Gulishakhali village around 2:30am, reports our Patualkhali correspondent.

The deceased, Md Mozammel, 45, was a ringleader of the robber gang of Titkata village in Patuakhali Sadar upazila.

On information, a police team conducted a drive at a deserted house when the robbers were taking preparation there, for committing a robbery, said Sukumar Roy, officer-in-charge of Amtali Police Station.

The gang first fired bullets targeting the law enforcers who then retaliated by firing shots, informs the OC.

Later, Mozammel’s body was found lying on the spot which was then sent to Barguna General Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC said, adding there were 12 criminal cases against the victim at different police stations in Barguna and Patuakhali districts.

The injured police men received primary treatment at Amtali Upazila Health Complex, he added.

Police detained six robbers from the scene. They are Ansar Ali, 35, Jahirul Islam, 32, and Bachchu, 30, of Titkata village in Patuakhali Sadar upazila; and Masum, 32, Anis, 34, and Nasir, 35, of Gulishakhali village in Amtali upazila.

Police also recovered seven bullets and four crude bombs from the spot.
