Chikungunya hits women, middle-aged people hardest in Ctg

Chikungunya is spreading rapidly in Chattogram, with women and middle-aged people emerging as the most vulnerable groups, according to a recent study.

The research, conducted by physicians of Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital Medical College, surveyed 120 patients between June and August.

It found that women made up 52.5 percent of cases, men 47.5 percent, with the average patient age at 45 years.

The study noted that 81 percent suffered fever, 73 percent had multiple joint pains, 43 percent body aches, 35 percent ankle swelling, and 34 percent skin rashes.

Researchers also reported atypical symptoms, including dark patches around the nose, ulcers, unfamiliar rashes, and morning stiffness in joints.

Blood test results showed 18 percent of patients had leukopenia or low white blood cells, 11 percent neutropenia, and 57.5 percent lymphopenia, suggesting weakened immunity.

Five patients were also diagnosed with both chikungunya and dengue.

Diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease were the most common comorbidities.

"Chikungunya has shown more diverse symptoms this time. Beyond fever and joint pain, we observed unusual skin and blood abnormalities. Physicians need to stay alert," said lead researcher Dr Rajat Shankar Roy Biswas.

The findings, published on US-based platform MedRxiv and submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, warned of possible long-term effects, including chronic joint pain and post-chikungunya arthritis.

Researchers stressed the need for early detection, treatment, and preventive action.
