Incessant rain in Dhaka, streets underwater

Heavy rain and thunderstorm since early today till the morning caused waterlogging in several parts of the capital, adding to suffering of commuters.

Heavy rain started around 5:45am and since then, light to moderate rainfall has continued.

Around 7:30am, water flooded various roads in areas such as Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Kalabagan, Karwan Bazar, Green Road, Monipuripara, New Market, Asadgate, Jhigatala, Khilkhet, causing heavy traffic congestions.

In some places, the water level was knee deep, while in the streets of Fakirapool, Kakrail, Malibagh, Rajarbag, and Motijheel, was waist-deep in water.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has reported that there was 34mm of rain in the capital from midnight last night until 6:00am today.

A low pressure is expected to form in the North Bay of Bengal today. Although the Met office has not announced it yet, meteorologist Md Shahinul Islam believes that its effects have already started.

While talking to Prothom Alo this morning, Shahinul said that a low pressure may already have formed. And possibly because of its influence, it is raining today not only in Dhaka but all over the country, especially in the coastal regions.
