‘Stop plastic use, save Kuakata’

Demanding an end to the use of disposable plastics to protect the environment of Kuakata beach, a memorandum signed by 2,783 people was handed over to the Patuakhali deputy commissioner (DC) on Tuesday.

Lincoln Bayen, Barisal divisional coordinator of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), its network members Shahabuddin Panna, Sohrab Hossain, Parveen Sultana and others handed over the memorandum.

Additional deputy commissioner (education and ICT) Israt Jahan received it on behalf of the DC and said necessary steps would be taken.

The memorandum noted that defying laws, the use of polythene and disposable plastics has been increasing, which is causing environmental pollution. In particular, piles of plastic waste can be seen at the country's various beaches, including Kuakata.

Therefore, to protect the natural beauty and environment of the tourist area, the memorandum called for taking steps against use of disposable plastics.
