Hill slides: Road links to Thanchi, Ruma remain cut

The road communications of Bandarban district town with Ruma and Thanchi upazilas remained suspended for several days following hill slides triggered by 8-days of heavy rains.

During a visit today, our Bandarban correspondent saw that hill slides at different places on the Bandarban-Thanchi road and Bandarban-Ruma road have damaged parts of roads blocking communication.

Locals said most areas of the district were inundated by floodwaters due to incessant rains for more than a week. During this time, the hill slides blocked communications on several roads in the district.

However, road communications of Bandarban district town with Ruma and Thanchi upazilas have remained completely snapped for days now.

Ring Tlang Bom, 25, a resident of Chimbuk Solo Mail area, told The Daily Star that no vehicles are plying the road due to landslides.

Rahul Hasan, warrant Officer of Bangladesh Army's 20 ECB, told this correspondent that every effort is being made to make the Bandarban-Ruma and Chimbuk-Nilgiri-Thanchi roads suitable for traffic.

"Today, the work is going on from Bandarban to Wai-Junction section of the road to make it ready for traffic movement. A few more teams will join the work tomorrow," he said.

He also said nearly 100-metre of the road in Pora Bangla area between Chimbuk and Nilgiri has collapsed. An alternative road will be constructed there.

Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Shah Mujahid Uddin told The Daily Star that efforts are on to restore road communication in the district.
