Writ-petition filed against ‘Adam’ for hurting ‘religious sentiments’

Writ-petition filed against ‘Adam’ for hurting ‘religious sentiments’

Abu Tauhid Heron's directorial film, "Adam", is expected to be released during Eid-ul-Fitr. However, last Thursday, a writ-petition was filed against the film by Md Jamil Hasan with the High Court. The film finished shooting in 2019 and recently released its trailer on April 2.

According to media outlets, a complaint was lodged to the Appeal Board against "Adam" on April 12, requesting to ban the film from being released. However, this was immediately resolved in favour of the film.

Afterwards, a writ-petition was filed against "Adam", trying to seek a ruling on why the film was not declared illegal and banned from being aired?

The complainant's lawyer named Ismail Hossain Bhuyan, who attested that the production's trailer showcases scenes and messages that hurt "religious beliefs and sentiments".

The trailer depicted a scene where a priest, imam and purohita are all gathered to judge Chameli, an unmarried, yet pregnant woman and her unborn child. The lawyer argues that hurting religious sentiments are against the laws and culture of Bangladesh, as such, the writ petition was filed to cancel the censor board clearance of "Adam" and ban its broadcasting.

"Adam" stars Yash Rohan and Jannatul Ferdous Oishee in the central roles. Moreover, fans will also get to see Rangan Riddo, Allen Shubhro, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Monira Akter Mithu, and Raisul Islam Asad, amongst others, in the film.

According to the lawyer, the next hearing of the case will possibly take place next week.
