Hollywood's "Tron: Ares" will hit Star Cineplex theatres on October 17. The American science fiction action film is the third instalment in the Tron series and a sequel to 2010's "Tron: Legacy". Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson, among others.

In October 2010, franchise creator Steven Lisberger began developing a sequel to "Tron: Legacy". By March 2017, it was revealed that the franchise would move forward not with a direct sequel but as a soft reboot. Jared Leto joined the project as producer and star, playing a new character named Ares — a concept preserved from earlier drafts of the "Ascension" script.

Lisberger's inspiration dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, during his time near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, when the idea of "first contact" with aliens sparked his imagination. He began to wonder: what if intelligent life did not come from space, but from within a machine not controlled by humans? Although the "Ascension" script was later abandoned, the creators deliberately retained elements of Ares's story from that version, believing its central idea had become increasingly relevant. Since "Legacy's" release, "Ares's" concept has only grown timelier.

In August 2020, when Wigutow was working on the screenplay, Garth Davis was appointed as director. However, he stepped down in January 2023 and was replaced by Rønning the following month. Production was scheduled to begin in August 2023, but was delayed due to the Writers Guild of America strike. Filming eventually commenced in Vancouver in January 2024 and wrapped in May.

Disney aims to reboot this 45-year-old sci-fi franchise with a fresh vision — one that explores modern questions of artificial intelligence, human morality, and the control of technology. The story centres on Ares, a highly advanced "programme" sent from the virtual world known as the Grid into the real world. His mission is to establish the first direct contact between humanity and artificial life — but that contact is far from peaceful.

Scientists create an AI entity possessing intelligence far beyond human comprehension. This entity, Ares, is designed to bridge the gap between the human and digital worlds. However, once Ares enters reality, he discovers that humans fear him and seek to destroy him. Torn between two worlds, he must decide whether to fight for humanity or for the freedom of his own kind. This central conflict — the struggle between humanity and artificial life — forms the philosophical core of the film.
