Shyam Benegal told me that I'll be in his next film: Dibya Joyti
Dibya Joyti has become one of the promising faces in the industry. After his portrayal of the role of Masum in the much-talked web series "Mohanagar 2", he earned immense appreciation for his performance. Previously, he had appeared in the second season of the web series "Karagar". Further, he will be seen in Shyam Benegal's "Mujib: The Making of a Nation" which is awaiting its release on October 19.
He will also be seen in the film, "Nokshi Kathar Jomin" directed by Akram Khan and in drama serial "Parallel".
How does it feel to portray such an iconic figure in Bangladeshi history?
Acting in a movie based on the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is an emotional journey for me. We filmed and dubbed it in 2021. Knowing that it's set to release on October 13, one day before my birthday, makes this project even more special. I'm filled with happiness.
It must have been quite challenging to portray a young Bangabandhu. How did you prepare for such a role?
Initially, I felt the pressure, considering he is such an iconic politician and one of the greatest Bengalis of all time. To prepare, I delved into extensive research, studying numerous books, including "The Unfinished Memoirs" by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman himself. I even had the privilege of meeting the Prime Minister, who shared some invaluable insights. This helped me gather the courage to portray Bangabandhu from the age of 16 to 19.
Working with Shyam Benegal, a renowned film director, must have been an incredible experience. Can you tell us more about it?
It was an absolute joy to work under Shyam Benegal's direction. Despite being 87 years old during our shoot, he showed remarkable dedication. Shyam Benegal was always the first to arrive on set, as early as 5:30 in the morning. He meticulously oversaw every scene, ensuring only the best shots were used.
He affectionately referred to me as 'Youngman,' a term that still brings a smile to my face. Having watched all of his movies in my personal life, this experience was truly surreal.
If Shyam Benegal were to offer you another project, what would your response be?
Shyam Benegal was in Dhaka on his 88th birthday, and I had the pleasure of bringing him some gifts. He was delighted, and he playfully called me 'Young Mujib.' During our time together on set, I expressed my desire to work with him again, even suggesting I could assist him. To this, he humorously replied, "Why work as an assistant? You'll act in my movie. You're part of my next project." This means the world to me, and I eagerly await any future collaborations with him.
