‘Grey’s Anatomy’ to continue with 23rd season on ABC
“Grey’s Anatomy” has been renewed for a 23rd season by ABC, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama on American television and the longest-running scripted series in the network’s history.
The renewal will take the series, created by Shonda Rhimes, beyond the 475-episode mark in the 2026–27 season.
However, the upcoming season will see the departure of two long-serving cast members. Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd are set to exit the show following the May 7 season finale, which McKidd is also directing.
Three actors — Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr — remain the longest-standing cast members, having been part of the series since its debut. Pompeo, who also serves as an executive producer and narrator, has reduced her on-screen presence in recent seasons.
Despite its long run, the series continues to perform strongly for ABC, particularly on streaming platforms. The show more than doubles its initial broadcast audience of 2.22 million viewers after a week of delayed viewing. It also ranks among the top 15 network series in the key 18–49 demographic. Its extensive back catalogue, available on Hulu and Netflix, remains a consistent presence in Nielsen’s streaming ratings.
"Grey’s Anatomy" joins previously renewed titles including "911", "911: Nashville", "Abbott Elementary" and "High Potential" in ABC’s 2026–27 lineup. The network has yet to confirm the future of comedies "Scrubs" and "Shifting Gears", as well as dramas "The Rookie", "Will Trent" and "RJ Decker".
