Family launches website to preserve Prabir Mitra’s legacy

A dedicated website to preserve the life and work of the late film actor Prabir Mitra has been launched by his family, organisers announced at a memorial event held recently at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation. 

The site — searchable as actorprobirmitra.com — will house photos, film credits and archival material intended to introduce future generations to Mitra's long career.

Prabir Mitra, who died on January 5 after a period of illness, was one of Bangladesh's most acclaimed character actors. Over a career spanning decades, he appeared in hundreds of films and was widely admired for his versatility on screen. Mitra's death prompted tributes across the country and a renewed interest in preserving his work. 

The family, represented at the launch by his son Mithun Mitra, said the website will collect photographs, filmographies and other materials so researchers, students and fans can access an organised record of Mitra's work. "People from the industry and the public still remember my father," Mithun told reporters; the new archive is intended as a permanent resource for that memory. 

Prabir Mitra's filmography includes marquee titles that helped define modern Bangladeshi cinema. He is remembered for roles in films such as "Titash Ekti Nadir Naam", "Jibon Trishna", "Fariyad", "Rokto Shopoth", "Charitrohin", "Angaar", and "Fakir Majnu Shah," among many others. Over his career he acted in well over 300 films and earned a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo", underscoring his contribution to the industry. 

Mitra's screen debut came early in the nation's film history; he entered cinema with H Akbar's "Jolchhobi", released in 1971, and thereafter remained a steady presence on screen and in theatre. His roles ranged from comic turns to weighty dramatic parts, a range that made him a familiar face across generations. 

The website launch follows other family-led efforts to conserve Mitra's legacy, including screenings and commemorative events organised by film bodies and colleagues. The archive aims to make his work easy to find and to ensure that a fuller picture of his career — not only marquee performances but also smaller, formative roles — survives in searchable form for students, historians and cinephiles.

For many in the industry, the site is a welcome gesture: a modest institutional step toward the systematic preservation of Bangladesh's film heritage, and a reminder that individual careers, however prolific, require active curation if they are to remain accessible to the public.
