Celebrities voice their reflections on the spirit of Victory Day
Bangladesh emerged as a sovereign state on December 16, 1971, following a nine-month-long Liberation War. This year, the nation celebrates Victory Day with renewed fervour, especially after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's regime on August 5, 2024.
Alongside the general public, many celebrities have shared their thoughts and reflections on this historic occasion through social media.

Cultural adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki took to his verified Facebook page, stating, "The martyrs of '71 will not come to save the murderers of '24. Therefore, the murderers of '24 or their apologists have no reason to feel encouraged by this. Instead, the martyrs of '24 are the rightful heirs to the legacy of '71."
He further elaborated, "Without '71, '24 would not have been possible. And without '24, the gains of '71 could not have been safeguarded. It is crucial to remember that '24 emerged because the spirit of '71 had been lost." Farooki concluded his post by wishing everyone a happy Victory Day.
Actress Jaya Ahsan shared a glimpse of her Victory Day preparations via a Facebook story, showing her handpicking fresh vegetables with the caption: "Preparing a special lunch for Victory Day. Wishing everyone a happy Victory Day!"
Ashfaque Nipun, director of the acclaimed crime thriller "Mahanagar" franchise, extended his heartfelt wishes, saying, "The country, bought with the blood of countless martyrs, belongs to no one's father. Heartfelt respect and love to the 30 lakh martyrs for bringing the greatest victory to the lives of Bangladeshis. We will never forget you."
Singer Asif Akbar also shared a post, writing, "Salam, Bangladesh. My heartfelt respect to all valiant freedom fighters. Wishing everyone a glorious Victory Day. Endless love to all."
At the press conference of her upcoming film "Priyo Maloti", actress Mehazabien Chowdhury began her statement by wishing everyone a joyful Victory Day and expressed gratitude to the media for their enthusiastic participation in the event.
The music band Chirkutt commemorated Victory Day by paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War. They shared a music video of "Shyamal Chhaya", a poignant portrayal of the Liberation War by Shamsur Rahman, along with their heartfelt greetings.
Actor Ziaul Faruq Apurba expressed his emotions on social media, sharing, "My Bangladesh, my sovereignty, the symbol of my independence, my identity, my pride. Wishing everyone a joyous Victory Day."
Meanwhile, actress Sabnam Faria wrote in her Victory Day post: "The day that will forever remain a source of pride for the people of this country is today, December 16—Victory Day. On this joyous day of triumph, I deeply and respectfully remember the valiant heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence. Wishing everyone a glorious Victory Day."
The day's celebrations began with a 31-gun salute, marking the moment the then Pakistani forces surrendered, and Bangladesh officially emerged as an independent nation. Wreaths were laid at the National Memorial in Savar by President Md Sahabuddin, followed by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus.
The National Memorial was then opened to allow political parties, socio-cultural and professional organisations, and educational institutions to lay wreaths and pay homage to the martyrs of 1971.
