Amazon MGM Studios has announced "Alone at Dawn", a new military drama directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard and starring Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway. The film will be released in theatres before streaming on Amazon.

Based on the book "Alone at Dawn" by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz, the movie is inspired by the true story of Air Force Combat Controller John A. Chapman, who fought to the death to save his comrades. Years later, an intelligence officer's investigation would posthumously earn him the Medal of Honor. Schilling, himself a former Combat Control Technician, serves as a consultant, while Chapman Longfritz — Chapman's sister — also contributes to the production.

The screenplay was written by Michael Russell Gunn, with revisions by Erin Cressida Wilson and Amy Herzog. Producers include Imagine Entertainment, The Hideaway Entertainment, and Thruline Entertainment.

The project's journey to production was as dramatic as its story. The manuscript was first acquired by The Hideaway Entertainment after a bidding war, later reaching Imagine Entertainment, where Howard was drawn to direct. With Driver on board — a former US Marine — the team sought his co-star, eventually casting Hathaway after she met with Howard and producers.

Howard's past adaptations of real-life stories include "Apollo 13" and "A Beautiful Mind", the latter winning Best Picture and earning him the Academy Award for Best Director. His latest collaboration with Amazon, "Thirteen Lives", depicted the 2018 Thai cave rescue.

Hathaway is currently filming "The Devil Wears Prada 2" and has completed Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey". She recently appeared in "Mother's Instinct", opposite Jessica Chastain, and "The Idea of You" for Amazon MGM Studios. Upcoming projects include "Mother Mary", "Verity", and "The Princess Diaries 3".

Driver's upcoming appearances include Jim Jarmusch's "Father Mother Sister Brother" and James Gray's "Paper Tiger". The two-time Oscar nominee is widely known for "Marriage Story", "BlacKkKlansman", "Ferrari", "House of Gucci", and his role as Kylo Ren in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy.
