The legendary singer Sabina Yasmin will be felicitated at a special event on September 7 at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The programme will also feature her solo musical performance, celebrating her timeless contributions to Bangladeshi music.

Organised by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and managed by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the event will open with a welcome speech by Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki. The felicitation will be presented to the artiste by Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud, Adviser to the Ministry of Planning.

Also expected to attend are Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid and Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Mofidul Rahman.

Titled "Shudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy", the second segment of the programme will begin at 7:30pm. It will feature a documentary on the life of Sabina Yasmin, reminiscences from eminent artistes, renditions of her songs reinterpreted by young singers and music directors, and a solo performance by the artiste herself. Actor Afzal Hossain will host the evening.

Born on September 4, 1954, into a culturally inclined family, Sabina Yasmin—celebrated as the nightingale of Bangla music—received her first lessons in music from her mother. At the age of just six, she won first prize in the All Pakistan School Music Competition and soon after lent her voice to films as a child artiste.

Over her illustrious career, she has recorded around 16,000 songs, most of them for films. Her repertoire also spans modern Bangla songs, folk music, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, and ghazals. A regular voice on radio and television, she has also performed songs in other languages and participated in numerous government and private events.

Among her many accolades, Sabina Yasmin received the Ekushey Padak in 1984 and the Independence Award in 1996—two of Bangladesh's highest civilian honours. She remains the only artiste in the country to hold a record 15 National Film Awards for Best Singer, alongside numerous other awards at home and abroad.
