BTS leader RM speaks out over lack of agency support
Signs of strain have emerged between global K-pop group BTS and their agency HYBE, following remarks by the band's leader RM suggesting a lack of institutional support.
During a live session on Monday (December 22), held as the members greeted fans ahead of the festive season, RM addressed questions surrounding the delay in BTS's long-awaited comeback. While discussing future plans with fellow members Jin, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook, RM openly expressed frustration with the agency's role.
"I wish our company would care for us more. I don't usually say things like this," RM said. "I wish they would look out for us."
The comment quickly drew attention from fans, many of whom interpreted it as an indication of deeper internal challenges within HYBE. On social media platform X, some fans speculated that the company's rapid expansion following BTS's global success may have led to management issues and shifting priorities.
"From a small company that suddenly became big after BTS's success, too many people are now involved," one user wrote, suggesting that newer management structures and additional artists may have diluted focus on the group.
Another fan pointed out the pressures faced by RM as leader, noting that responsibility is often disproportionately placed on him, which may explain his call for greater support from BigHit Music, HYBE's subsidiary label managing BTS.
The issue gained further traction after Elly Chae, a former director at BigHit Entertainment, commented publicly on RM's remarks. She said she was surprised by how direct the statement was.
"For an artist to say something like this so openly suggests there is a serious internal problem," Chae wrote, adding that the period following the members' return from military service should have marked the beginning of strong promotional efforts, including preparations for a world tour.
Chae also referenced ongoing tensions between HYBE and another K-pop group, NewJeans, pointing to a broader pattern of conflict within the company.
BTS last released a group studio album, "Proof," in 2022. Suga was the final member to complete his public service, returning to civilian life on June 21 after 21 months. Earlier in June, RM and V concluded their 18-month mandatory military service, followed a day later by Jungkook and Jimin. They reunited with Jin and J-Hope, who were discharged last year.
While no official statement has been issued by HYBE regarding RM's comments, the remarks have intensified fan scrutiny of the agency's handling of BTS's post-military comeback.
