Women more likely to opt for divorce than men in Pirojpur: Statistic
Women are three times more likely to opt for divorce compared to men in Pirojpur district of Bangladesh, according to a statistic.
In 2013, a total of 1,106 women in Pirojpur divorced their husbands while only 344 men divorced their wives, according to statistical data at Pirojpur District Registrar’s Office.
In 2014, the number of women, who divorced their spouses, was 1,213 while only 328 men divorced their wives. The trend has been similar in 2015 and 2016 too, our Pirojpur correspondent reports according to the data.
Most cases of divorce take place for women aged between 25 and 40 while for men aged below 35 years, marriage registrar sources said.
In most of the cases, women were found to divorce their husbands over allegations of drug addiction and domestic violence, said Md Abul Kalam, a marriage registrar from Sreerumkathi union under Nazirpur upazila of the district.
Children of divorced parents break down mentally and socially, said Abdur Razzak Khan, public prosecutor (PP- Women and Child) at Pirojpur Judges’ Court.
