TIB concerned over dilly-dallying arrest of OC Moazzem
Expressing grave concern over the dilly-dallying in arresting former officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain in connection with madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) said that it is an ominous sign for the country’s rule of law.
It is a matter of raising a question over the lacking of willingness in the police authority to bring Sonagazi former OC Moazzem to book, TIB said in a press statement this afternoon.
TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman in the release said newspapers published reports that an arrest warrant was issued against the Sonagazi former OC in connection with a case filed under the Digital Security Act on May 27 but it took more than a week to reach Rangpur range via Feni’s police superintendent office.
Besides, the Rangpur range office said the job (issuing arrest warrant) was not done properly and the reports of newspapers said that Moazzem went into hiding taking the opportunity, the TIB director alleged.
Arresting an accused without warrant under the Digital Security Act is a normal issue, he said adding the police administration’s failure in arresting Moazzem created uncertainty in ensuring justice in Nusrat murder case.
He also called upon the police authority to ensure transparency in dealing with the case and demanded judicial enquiry into the killing incident.
He said violence against women and children in the country reached at an alarming stage. The pledge of establishing rule of law in the country will go in vain if the transparency and accountability of police is not ensured in this circumstance, he added.
