Protest memo handed to Pakistan envoy

Bangladesh today handed a strong-worded protest memo to Pakistan envoy in Dhaka after the country's statement on execution of top war criminals Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

Top BNP leader SQ Chowdhury, a self proclaimed brigadier against pro-liberation forces, and ace Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mojaheed, chief of notorious Al Badr force in 1971, were hanged on Sunday.

Afterwards, Pakistan issued a statement voicing "deep concern and anguish" stating there is "need for reconciliation in accordance with the spirit of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh Agreement of 1974".

The statement drew sharp reactions and Pakistan envoy in Dhaka Shuja Alam was summoned – hours after the statement. The meeting was held this afternoon.

At the meeting, Foreign Secretary (Bilateral and Consular) Mizanur Rahman handed over the protest note to Pakistan High Commissioner in Dhaka Shuja Alam at the state guesthouse Padma.

During the 30-munite-long meeting, Mizanur Rahman told the envoy that the Pakistan's statement is unacceptable, the acting foreign secretary told The Daily Star after the meeting.
