BGB man among 2 trampled by elephants

Wild elephants are said to have trampled a Border Guard Bangladesh trooper and a woodcutter today in Cox's Bazar and Chittagong in separate incidents.

In Cox's Bazar, member of BGB-17 Battalion in Cox's Bazar, Lance Nayek Md Habibur Rahman, 40, was trampled around 2:00am when he was on duty at Rejukal bridge area in Cox's Bazaar-Teknaf Marine drive, reports our district correspondent.

Habibur who hailed from East Chad Kathi of Jhalakathi, died on the spot, said BGB Cox's Bazar sector commander Colonel Md Khalequzzaman.

His body has been kept in Cox's Bazar Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.

The woodcutter, identified as Ahmed Noor, 32, son of Siddique Ahmed from Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong, was trampled around 7:00am, reports our local correspondent quoting Hamidul Huq Mannan, Ahala Karaldenga union Parishad chairman who visited the site.

The poor villager and father of two girls used to earn his living by cutting wood in the hill.

He went to Karaldenga hill to cut logs along with four to five fellow woodcutters in the morning, Mannan said quoting eyewitnesses. A wild elephant herd came out of the jungle and went on a rampage. Noor died while others managed to flee.

Shamshul Islam, officer-in-charge of Boalkhali Police Station said a general diary will be filed in this connection.
