This Star file photo shows Nazma Khatun smiling after receiving her baby. The baby, Suraiya, received bullet injuries while in her mother's womb during a Jubo League factional clash in Magura.

An accused in a case filed over shooting a pregnant mother in Magura surrendered before a local court today.

The charge sheeted accused Tabibur Rahman Tota, 40, also general secretary of Magura Awami Somobai League, surrendered before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Firoz Mamun, reports our local correspondent.

Denying the bail plea, the court sent him to jail.

Earlier on July 23, eight-month pregnant Nazma was shot in her abdomen during an attack by a faction of Magura Jubo League on their rival faction in Doarpar area of Magura town. The attack also left one killed.

A bullet pierced through the unborn baby's right shoulder and also injured her right eye.

Miraculously, the baby survived after a two-hour caesarean operation on her mother at Magura General Hospital on that day. The 35-year-old mother survived too.

The baby's relatives brought the newborn to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on July 26. A 10-member medical board was formed to ensure proper treatment of the baby.

The two returned to their Magura home on August 20 after undergoing treatment at DMCH for about a month.

A case was filed with Magura Sadar Police Station in connection with the July 23 clash, accusing 16 people, including Sen Suman, of involvement in the incident.
