At least 40 people were injured as two trains collided head-on at Kakina Railway Station in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat this morning.

Train service on Lalmonirhat-Burimari route remained suspended for three and a half hours due to the collision, our correspondent reports quoting Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Railway Police Station.

Soon after the accident, mobs went on a rampage at the Kakina Railway Station and damaged its several windowpanes, office equipment and others valuables, the OC said.

A Burimari-bound commuter train and a Lalmonirhat-bound local train collided at Kakina station around 8:52am, leaving 40 passengers of both the trains injured.

Thirty of the injured passengers were sent to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex while the rest were sent to Lalmonirhat Sadar and Rangpur Medical College Hospital, the police official said.

A four-member committee headed by Mustafizur Rahman, divisional traffic superintendent (Lalmonirhat), was formed to investigate the reason behind the accident.

"We have been asked to submit our report within 24 hours," Rahman told our correspondent.
