5 killed in N'ganj, Ctg road crashes
At least five persons were killed and five other injured in separate road accidents in Narayanganj and Chittagong today.
Among the victims, three people died in Chittagong and rest two in Narayanganj.
In Narayanganj, two persons were killed in a road accident as a goods-laden truck ran over a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Siddhirganj early today.
The deceased were identified as Mahbub Alam, 29, a passenger of the auto-rickshaw hailing from Damudya of Shariatpur and the auto-rickshaw driver Monir Hossain, 30, of Manohardi in Narsingdi, reports our Narayanganj correspondent quoting police.
The incident took place in Dhakeshwari area around 3:30am. The jute-laden truck fled from the scene leaving both Mahbub and Monir dead on the spot, said Inspector Nazrul Islam of Siddhirganj Police Station.
Mahbub was returning home from work on the battery-run auto-rickshaw from Shimrail intersection in Siddhirganj, the police official said.
The bodies of the victims were kept at Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy, he said, adding that police were trying to catch the truck.
In Chittagong, three persons including a woman were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Satkania and Sitakunda upazilas.
In Satkania, a Cox's Bazar-bound bus hit a microbus while trying to overtake it on Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway around 6:30am, leaving two persons dead on the spot and five others injured, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dohazari Highway Police Outpost, told The Daily Star.
The incident took place at Nayakhal area on the highway, the OC said, adding that the deceased were identified as Md Forkan, 29, of Satkania upazila and Nasrin Sultana, 25, of Patia upazila.
Police seized the bus and detained its driver, he said.
The injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment, our Chittagong correspondent reports quoting Alauddin Talukder, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of CMCH Police Outpost.
Meanwhile in Sitakunda, a covered van hit a motorcycle in Banur Bazar area around 12:00pm, leaving the motorcycle rider dead on the spot, said Inspector Rafiqul Alam Mazumder of Highway Traffic Police.
The identity of the deceased was yet to be known, the police official added.
