One held for vandalising idol of Durga

A man was arrested for allegedly vandalising an idol of Durga at a temple in Bhadai Club Bazar area in Lalmonirhat’s Aditmari upazila last night.

A mob caught Nur Islam Pocha, 25, of Shibbari village in the upazila, handed him over to police after a good beating, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

Nur Islam along with at least seven people entered Radha Ballav Durga Temple breaking its bamboo-made gate around 10.00pm and started hitting the Durga statue, said Saiful Islam, acting officer-in-charge (OC) Aditmari Police Station.

At one stage, Nur was caught red handed by the locals while the others managed to flee the scene, the OC said.

A case was lodged accusing seven to eight culprits including Nur Islam early today, he added.

“We are trying to arrest all the accused”, the police official said.

The culprits vandalised the hands, head, legs of the idol without any reason,” said Amol Chabndra Barman, general secretary of the temple.

“The damaged statue will be repaired by tomorrow as Durga puja starts on Friday,” he said.
