Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today issued directives to the officials concerned to ensure smooth vehicular movement on roads during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

“You should remain alert against setting up sacrificial animal markets beside roads affecting vehicular movement,” he said at a meeting at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office here.

High officials of BRTA and Traffic Department of Police and leaders of transport owners and workers associations were present in the meeting on mitigation of the sufferings of common people during the Eid.

Quader urged the members of law enforcement agencies, officials of Road Transport and Highways Division and local people to work together to prevent traffic jam and public sufferings during the Eid.

He suggested taking steps immediately if any vehicle, carrying passengers or animals, becomes inoperative on roads and highways.

Regarding the BNP’s allegation on the upcoming three city corporation polls, Quader said BNP is resorting to allegations so that they can use these as a tool after their defeat in the polls.

Quader, also the general secretary of Awami League, said “BNP is losing before being defeated…So, they are raising hypothetical allegations regarding city polls.”

He said, “BNP has made an allegation that there is no level playing field in the three city polls. But, the reality is that BNP secretary general is taking part in different electoral campaigns and I cannot take part in electioneering.”

“We have asked all leaders and activists of Awami League to abide by all directions of the Election Commission (EC). We also warned the local lawmakers not to take part in campaigns violating rules of EC,” the minister added.
