98pc terrorist incidents foiled: DMP chief

Ninety eight per cent terrorist incidents have been foiled by the law enforcers in the country, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said today.

“Only one or two incidents take place and come to light, but 98 per cent of the (terror) incidents are not taking place due to our constant intelligence-based operations and identification and arrest of terrorists,” he said.

“We are working on it silently,” he said while inaugurating a workshop at Cirdap auditorium in Dhaka.

DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit and Crime Reporters Association Bangladesh organised the workshop on “Reporting on Terrorism”.

He also said there are no major terrorist incidents reported after the July 1 Gulshan cafe attack.

CTTC Chief Monirul Islam said militants want to get coverage on media through violent activities and attack to reach common people, gain their support and spread fear and intimidation.

“While writing reports about the terrorists, media should avoid the words that can portray them as heroes rather focus on sufferings of the terror attack victims and their families,” he said.

Zayadul Ahsan Pintu, editor of private TV channel DBC News, said journalists have to inform people what is going on but should keep the interest of the countrymen in mind simultaneously, especially while covering incidents of terrorism and anti-terrorism drives.

Online news portal Banglatribune.com executive editor Harun Ur Rashid, Crab General Secretary Dipu Sarwar, among others, also spoke at the programme.
