Train derailment in Gazipur

Four people were killed and at least ten injured as a commuter train derailed in Tongi, Gazipur this afternoon.

Only one of the deceased could be identified as Shahadat Hossain, 35, a rickshaw puller, who was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Shahadat and his uncle were on the roof and jumped off when the train derailed, reports our correspondent quoting Aminul Islam, his maternal uncle, who was also injured.

Four carriages of the Dhaka-bound train, coming from Jamalpur, veered off the tracks at Notun Bazar around 12:45pm. It is being suspected that the derailment occurred when the train was changing tracks.

Following the incident, rail link between Dhaka and other parts of the country was interrupted. It was restored around 6:30pm, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tongi Railway Police Station.

Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the accident site and assured of monetary assistance to the family members of the deceased. He also assured to offer assistance to bear treatment costs of those injured.

A three-member probe committee has been formed over the incident, which has been asked to submit a report within three-working days.
