Language hero Syed Abdul Hannan dies

Syed Abdul Hannan, a language movement veteran and Freedom Fighter, died from old age complications at a private hospital in Dhaka city early Tuesday. He was 87.

Abdul Hannan, also former principal of Sherpur Government College, breathed his last at City Hospital around 4:40am.

He left behind his wife, two sons, three daughters and hosts of relatives to mourn his death.

The language hero will be buried at his family graveyard in Modyosheri area of the district town at 4:30 pm after a namaj-e-janaza at Sherpur Pouro Eidgah Maidan.

Locally known as 'Hannan Sir', the language hero was born on December 25, 1932.

He got involved with the Language Movement in 1952 when he was studying honours 1st year in Dhaka University. Hannan and his brother Syed Abus Sattar were arrested from a procession being carried out demanding 'Bangla Basha'.

He was also an organiser of the Liberation War in 1971. For helping intellectuals and freedom fighters in Sherpur during liberation war, he was arrested three times and jailed for four months.
