VNSC teacher Hasna gets bail
Viqarunnisa Noon School and College teacher Hasna Hena, who was arrested on charge of “provoking the suicide” of ninth-grader Aritry Adhikary, got bail yesterday.
Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah passed the order considering her age and that there was no specific allegation against her, court sources said.
Hasna Hena, 51, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on December 5. She was sent to jail the next day by a Dhaka court.
Aritry's father Dilip Adhikary filed the case with Paltan Police Station on December 4, a day after she died by suicide, after reportedly being subject to humiliation by teachers.
The death sparked protests by two groups over the last week. One of them, demanding justice for Aritry, postponed their demonstrations on Thursday, after being assured that their six-point demand would be fulfilled.
Meanwhile, another group started demonstrating from Thursday demanding Hasna Hena's release, claiming that she was not involved in the incident.
Yesterday, around 200 current and former students, some teachers and guardians took position near the entrance of the institution in the capital's Bailey Road around 9:ooam.
The students began a hunger strike from 11:00am, which they ended around 12:50pm after teachers convinced them not to wage any movement, as there was still a legal way to release Hasna Hena.
Earlier, a three-member representative team of students submitted a memorandum to the education ministry, demanding release and withdrawal of the case against Hasna Hena, they said.
