‘Conspiracy against govt’: Hizb-ut Tahrir chief acquitted of charges

A Dhaka court today jailed two Hizb-ut Tahrir members for two years and also acquitted its four others including its chief coordinator Mohiuddin Ahmed in a case filed on charge of conspiring against the government.

Judge Majibur Rahman of the Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal of Dhaka acquitted the four as allegations brought against them were not proved.

Mohiuddin, also a teacher of Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of Dhaka University, and three other acquitted Hizb-ut Tahrir members -- MA Yusuf Ali Khan, Tanvir Ahmed and Kazi Morshedul Haque alias Plabon – were present at the courtroom.

Saidur Rahman alias Rajib and Tauhidul Alam alias Chanchal were sentenced to two years imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000 each. Both Rajib and Chanchal remain absconding.

The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the court said while delivering the judgement.

According to the case statement, a group of Hizb-ut Tahrir leaders and activists including Mohiuddin held a meeting against the government at sector-2 in Uttara on April 18, 2010. 

He was arrested on the same day. Later police filed a case under anti-terrorism act with Uttara Model Police Station.

Detective Branch of police Inspector Nurul Amin pressed charges on February 9, 2013.
