Bangabandhu's killer Abdul Majed arrested, sent to jail

Captain Abdul Majed, convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj -- hours after he was arrested in Dhaka today.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka AM Zulfikar Hayat passed order after Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit under Dhaka Metropolitan Police produced him before the court around noon.

The court also sent the order sheet to Dhaka District and Sessions Judge's Court, which earlier sentenced him to death in the case.

The CTTC unit, in its forwarding report, said Abdul Majed was arrested from near Gabtoli Bus Stand of Dhaka around 3:45am today.

The Supreme Court on November 19, 2009, upheld the death sentences of Abdul Majed and 11 other self-confessed killers of Bangabandhu. Of them, five were executed on January 27, 2010.

Six other convicts including Abdul Majed remained at large. Another condemned killer died in Zimbabwe in June, 2001.

A taskforce comprised of ministers and high officials of the foreign, law and home ministries was formed in 2010 to locate and bring back the fugitives.

The government had also made global appeals in bilateral, regional and international forums to track down the culprits.

In a video conference, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said Abdul Majed was not only involved in the killing of Bangabandhu but also in the killings of four national leaders inside jail.

"We hope that we will be able to execute the verdict as per the court's order…I think it is a best gift for the people during Mujib Borsho," he said.

The minister said the late president Ziaur Rahman awarded the killers in many ways and obstructed their trial through indemnity bill.
