At least four people were killed and a hundred others injured as police tried to prevent mob in Bhola from taking revenge against a man they thought responsible for a hate conversation through Facebook’s messenger app.

Protesting the incident, several hundred students of different madrasas, most of them are followers of Hefazat-e-Islam, staged demonstration in Hathazari Bus Stand area around 5:00 pm and brought out a protest procession there, local and police sources said.

The aggrieved students also blocked Hathazari Road and at one stage, they started pelting brickbats at police and vandalised the nearby police station.

They were staging demonstration setting fire on tyres at Hathazari Bus Station till filling the report around 8:00 pm.

Moshiuddowla Reza, additional superintendent of police in Chattogram (North), told The Daily Star that Hefazat activists and other madrasa students staged demonstration centring the incident in Bhola.

“At one stage of their demonstration, they vandalised the police station and attacked policemen when the law enforcers tried to stop them,” the police official said.

However, the law enforcers brought the situation was under control, he added.
