Mother, infant die in Dhaka city fire

A woman and her seven-month-old son were burnt to death after a fire broke out at a building in Dhaka’s Mirpur area last night.

The deceased were identified as Mina Begum, 22, and her son Tamim. Mina’s husband Manik, 30, a security guard of the building, is fighting for life at the burn unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The fire suspected to have originated from accumulated gas around 11:45pm on the ground floor of a four-storey building in Mirpur’s section-11 area when the victims were in the room, Abdullah Al Arefin, senior station officer of Mirpur Fire Station.

On information, two fire fighting units rushed to the spot and douse the fire, he said.

The window and door of the room and some parts of the wall collapsed during the incident, the official said.

The victims were taken to the burn unit where doctors declared the baby dead early today. Mina succumbed to her injures around 5:00pm today.
