Germany pledges 285.3m for Bangladesh

Germany has pledged to provide €285.3 million to Bangladesh for various development programmes.

The country also announced another €29 million financial assistance for Rohingyas and the host communities.

In 2017 and 2016, Germany provided Bangladesh with €83 million and €261.2 million financial assistance respectively, reaching the total amount to €3 billion since 1972.

The announcements were made at a meeting between the officials of Bangladesh and Germany on Monday.

The meeting ended committing mutual cooperation on the renewable energy and energy efficiency, climate change adaptation in urban areas, and rule of law and good governance.

In addition, support to the management of the Sundarbans was agreed, said a press release of German Embassy.

Khalilur Rahman Khan, additional secretary of Europe wing of economic relations division under finance ministry, headed the Bangladesh delegation. German delegation was headed by Wolfram Klein, head of South Asia Division in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Peter Fahrenholtz, ambassador of Germany to Bangladesh, made opening remarks and Mahmuda Begum, secretary-in-charge of economic relations division under finance ministry, gave the welcome speech.
