14 Singapore returnee militant suspects sent to jail

A Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka sends 14 militant suspects, who were repatriated by Singapore police recently, to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

A Dhaka court today sent 14 militant suspects, who were repatriated by Singapore police recently, to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Rani Chakroborty passed the order after Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Mustafa Anwar produced them before the court on completion of their four-day remand.

Anwar, also the investigation officer of the case, told the court that they were directly or indirectly involved in terror activities and making attempts to create anarchy in the country.

“So, they should be confined to jail until the investigation completes,” he said.

On the other hand, their lawyers submitted separate petitions seeing their bail.

The court placed the accused on a four-day remand on December 22, a day after they were arrested from Dhaka’s Uttara area. They were shown arrest in the case filed under Anti-Terrorism Act.

Earlier, the accused were expatriates in Singapore. Singapore police sent back them to Bangladesh saying that they were involved in militant activities.  

Suspects: Aminul, 31, Abdul Alim, 33, and Shah Alam, 28, of Tangail, Golam Zilani, 26,  Nurul Amin, 26, and Mahmudul Hasan, 40, of Comilla, Jafar Iqbal, 27, of Brahmanbaria, Akram Hossain, 27, of Jhenaidah, Abdul Ali, 40, of Chuadanga, Ashraf Ali, 27, of Pabna, Saiful Islam, 36, of Dhaka, Alam Mahbub, 34, of Kurigram, Dalar Parvej, 27, of Chapainawabganj and Md Jasim, 33, of Munshiganj.

According to the case statement, it was alleged that the accused used to discuss militant activities and collect funds at Angolia Mosque near Mostafa Market in Singapore for carrying out militant activities in Bangladesh.
