10kg gold seized at Shahjalal, 5 held
Customs officials today seized 10 kilogrammes of gold in 86 bars and detained five people in this connection from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The gold worth Tk 5 crore was seized from five people who came in from Dubai in a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight around 2:30pm, said Kazi Mohammad Zia Uddin, joint commissioner of airport customs.
Tipped-off, officials searched the five people and made the recovery, he added. The five, whose nationalities could not be confirmed, were detained in this connection.
The flight arrived in Dhaka from Dubai via Chittagong. All the five detainees boarded the aircraft in Chittagong, he said.
The official suspected that someone smuggled the gold into the country from Dubai and handed those over to the five people in Chittagong.
In primary interrogation, the detainees disclosed some names who they were supposed to hand over the gold in Dhaka.
