Presidency University holds workshop on cyber security and capture-the-flag (CTF)

With cybercrime becoming an increasingly pressing global concern in the digital age, Presidency University organised a workshop titled "Introduction to Cyber Security & CTF" to help students develop practical knowledge and skills in cyber security. The workshop was held on Thursday (July 23) at Seminar Hall 401 of the university's Gulshan campus and drew enthusiastic participation from students.
The event was organised by the PU Cyber Security Club (PUCSC) with the support of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). Professor Dr Md Anwarul Kabir, Principal Advisor of the university, attended the program as the chief guest, while Professor Dr Shahidul Islam Khan, Dean of the School of Engineering and Head of the CSE Department, chaired the session. Faculty members and university officials from different departments were also present.
The keynote session was conducted by Abrar Jahin Sarkar, a Machine Learning Research Engineer at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He introduced participants to the fundamentals of cybersecurity, the evolving cyber threat landscape, ethical hacking, and the concept of Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions. Alongside theoretical discussions, he engaged students through practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises, illustrating how even a seemingly minor security vulnerability can lead to significant cyber risks.
The workshop was coordinated by Mostafa Kamal Sagar, Lecturer in the CSE Department and Moderator of the PU Cyber Security Club. According to the organisers, the initiative was designed to complement classroom learning by exposing students to practical cyber security concepts and real-world problem-solving techniques.
Speakers at the program noted that the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital services has created a growing demand for skilled cyber security professionals worldwide. They emphasised that developing practical expertise during university years can better prepare students for careers in the technology sector, both at home and abroad.
The closing session featured an award ceremony for the winners of the PUCSC's "One Video, One Member" campaign. All participants received e-certificates, club-branded pens, and refreshments.
The organisers expressed hope that such hands-on workshops and industry-oriented technical programs will continue to inspire students, strengthen their practical competencies, and encourage them to contribute to building a safer and more secure digital Bangladesh.
