Students of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (Kuet) demonstrated earlier today, calling for the vice-chancellor's (VC) resignation. This was one of their five demands.

The KUET students have been demonstrating for their five-point demand since 9:00 AM on Wednesday in front of the university's medical centre, where the ailing VC, Muhammad Masud, is currently under treatment.

The students said that the VC, pro-VC, and director of student welfare were given until 1:00 PM on Wednesday to accept responsibility for their failure to ensure campus safety and resign. However, when they did not step down, the students took formal steps to suspend academic activities. At 1:45 PM, the protesters marched across the campus and padlocked the main entrance of several academic buildings.

The Kuet campus was witness to violent clashes on Tuesday, through the afternoon and into the evening, between the BNP student wing Chhatra Dal and the anti-discrimination student movement over demands to ban campus politics.

The violent confrontations left more than a hundred students injured. Later that night the protesting students announced their five-point demands at a press conference at the campus medical centre.

The demands include an ordinance to permanently expel anyone involved in politics on campus; legal and disciplinary action, including expulsion, against those involved in Tuesday's violence; deployment of military personnel around the campus until February 28 to ensure security; pay for treatment of injured students; resignation of the VC, pro-VC, and director of student welfare, acknowledging their failure.

Since morning, a tense calm has prevailed on the Kuet campus. While shops outside the campus have reopened, an air of unease lingers. Law enforcement personnel have taken position at the main gate, and military patrols have been observed. Meanwhile, many students have started leaving their dormitories out of fear.
