Here's what's new: Apple WWDC 2018

The Apple WWDC is one of the most important events of the year. In this event, Apple shows off its brand new software features for its devices. This year, it's been no different.

iOS 12 - Security and speed

Apple's security situation has been quite terrible. A mysterious symbol spread throughout the internet that apparently crashed devices after someone opened any message containing the symbol, dubbed the "black dot" bug. The OS will hit devices capable of handling iOS 11, which means the iPhone 5S will receive the update as well. Apple promises up to 40% faster app launch, 50% faster keyboard display and 70% faster camera launch speed.

ARKit

The ARKit received a new update. Apple teamed up with Pixar to develop a new file format to share AR content. Apple also showed off its AR accuracy through an app called Measure, accurately detecting the dimensions of real-life objects. Brands like Fender and Lego have also partnered up with Apple. Lego showed off a demo taking advantage of ARKit 2.0's multiplayer option in a Sims-like scenario in an AR Lego Town.

System app optimisations

On top of faster app launching, the photos app got a bunch of smart features; like recognising faces from iCloud photos. Siri got an important update as well, called shortcut. Users will be allowed to map a single voice command to several actions occurring simultaneously. Siri also added integration with third-party apps and items for bespoke voice commands. Stocks and news apps have been combined, and this app will find its way to iPads soon. Facetime also received a massive feature called the Group Calling, supporting up to 32 people for video calls.

MacOS Mojave

MacOS Mojave brought a Dark Mode, which gives the apps a darker tone. This will help late-night usage and video encoders preferring a darker background because of easier color distinction. Messy desktops aren't a problem, as desktop stacks plan to automatically stack a messy desktop into a tidy one.

WatchOS and Apple TV

WatchOS will bring support for competing against friends on customised fitness competitions. Yoga exercises can be tracked based on heart-rates and hiking uses heart-rate and altitude. Podcasts are arriving on wristwatches, syncing audio across devices. The Watch also received a new feature called walkie-talkie, letting you have a quick chat anytime. Apple TV also received Dolby Atmos object-based audio, bringing overhead sound with surround audio. The Apple TV stands as the only 4K set-top box with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision certification.
