'Celebration of Abed Bhai’s Life and Legacy' held at BRAC University

BRAC University held a daylong programme to mark the 90th birth anniversary of its founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed at its Merul Badda campus.

The programme, titled “Celebration of Abed Bhai’s Life and Legacy”, highlighted his contributions to social development in Bangladesh and beyond, according to a press release.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar inaugurated the university’s 25th anniversary celebrations and unveiled the Silver Jubilee logo. The university was founded on June 16, 2001.

The day began with a photo exhibition showcasing Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s work and impact.

A Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Open Rated Chess Tournament 2026 was also held, with more than 300 participants from across the country.

A six-a-side football match titled “জীবনের জয়গান ফুটবল ম্যাচ” was organised between teams from BRAC Secondary School of Purbogangabordi in Faridpur Sadar and BRAC University.

In the afternoon, students presented cultural performances including music and dance inspired by Sir Abed’s ideals. The segment was moderated by Khairul Basher, director of the Office of Communications.

The programme concluded with the distribution of awards for the football tournament by Board of Trustees Chairperson Tamara Hasan Abed, Member Salahdin Irshad Imam, Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar, Treasurer Ariful Islam and Registrar Dave Dowland.

“We have a yearlong extensive list of celebrations, recognitions, togetherness…building bonds with ourselves, the ecosystem, with partners abroad…we will be involving everybody,” said Tamara Hasan Abed.

BRAC Institute of Languages Advisor Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed and Student Life Joint Director Tahsina Rahman were also present.
