Gold price rises past Tk 2 lakh a bhori

Gold prices have crossed the Tk 2 lakh mark for the first time in Bangladesh, as jewellers yesterday decided to increase the price by Tk 3,199 per bhori.
With effect from today, each bhori of 22-carat gold will cost Tk 200,775 — a historic high — according to the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus).
Gold prices in Bangladesh have been climbing steadily, setting new records almost every week. In September alone, the price of 22-carat gold jumped by over Tk 16,000 per bhori.
Industry insiders attribute the surge mainly to the international bullion market, the devaluation of the taka, economic uncertainty, and high inflation.
Despite the onset of the festive season, including Durga Puja, and the upcoming winter months — traditionally a peak time for jewellery sales — traders report a sharp fall in customer demand.
Some shops in Dhaka say sales have halved in recent weeks.
Although Bangladesh does not import significant volumes of gold, domestic prices remain closely aligned with global trends.
