Passengers may carry any amount of cash during domestic travel: HSIA executive director

Customs officials say they had no objection, as the matter does not fall under their jurisdiction

Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), today said passengers may carry any amount of cash when travelling on domestic routes, as there are no restrictions on the amount of money allowed.

“There are no restrictions on the amount of money that can be carried during travel on domestic routes. Therefore, a passenger may carry any amount of cash,” he told The Daily Star.

His remarks came following the incident in which police detained Thakurgaon district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Belal Uddin Prodhan with around Tk 74 lakh at Saidpur airport around 12:00pm today.

The customs department is not involved in matters related to carrying money on domestic routes. Its responsibilities are limited to international flights, where duties and taxes are imposed as applicable.

“Although the amount that was found at Saidpur airport was large, we contacted customs. Officials said they had no objection, as the matter does not fall under their jurisdiction.”

SM Ragib added that they have received no prior instructions stating that carrying a large sum of money during domestic travel is prohibited.
