Sabyasachi Prokashoni swarmed by protesters at Ekushey Boi Mela; Mahfuj issues warning

Protesters swarmed Sabyasachi Prokashoni's stall on the evening of February 10, 2025 at Ekushey Boi Mela. The bookstall had been receiving threats of an attack since February 9.
Calls for protest and vandalism were initiated on Facebook; the circulation of a book, Chumbon, by exiled author Taslima Nasrin, published by the same publication, was cited as the reason for the protest. On the night of February 9, posts circulated on Facebook, encouraging the destruction of the stall due to their promotion of Taslima Nasrin and other writers who had been deemed unacceptable by the crowd.
According to the publishers, they have faced several threats online since then. From writer Shatabdi Vobo's public Facebook account, it was shared that a representative of Bangla Academy had told them to remove the book from their stalls. Police from Shahbag Thana had reportedly also suggested the same. Following their advice, the book Chumbon was removed from Sabyasachi Prokashoni's stall.
Later, around the evening of February 10, the stall came under attack by a group of people despite the book being removed. Due to police protection, the crowd was unable to attack directly and instead gathered outside the stall, threatening to vandalise it. The situation grew tense quickly, and police forces safely escorted Vobo out of the stall, after which he was kept under their protection. The stall was forced to shut down in front of the crowd. No news of harm or injury has been reported yet.
Alluding to the event, Mahfuj Alam, adviser to the interim government, posted in a Facebook status that the government would begin handling such issues with an iron fist. "From now on, we will firmly confront so-called movements and mob demonstrations," read the status. "Any attempt to render the state ineffective and prove it to be a failure will not be tolerated in the slightest."
