Bangladesh 41 for 1, trail India by 646 runs

Bangladesh reached 41 for 1in 14 overs after India declared their first innings at 687 for 6 on the second day of the Test match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad today.

India picked up the wicket of Soumya Sarkar late in the day with a successful review. The on-field umpire had ruled not out when bowler Umesh Yadav and the fielders appealed for the caught behind. However, when the decision was reviewed, UltraEdge showed the thin edge and Soumya had to go back to the pavilion.

At the close of play, Tamim Iqbal was unbeaten on 24 and Mominul Haque on one. Umesh picked up the only wicket for India.

Earlier, India declared their first innings at 687 for 6 in 166 overs during the last session of the second day.

Wriddhiman Saha was not out on 106 from 155 balls and Ravindra Jadeja 60 from 78 balls when Indian captain declared with the hosts reaching their fifth highest total in Test cricket. The seventh wicket stand between Saha and Jadeja produced 118 runs in only 25.3 overs to pile on the misery on the tourists.

Double ton from Virat Kohli and useful contributions from Ajinkya Rahane and R Ashwin kept the Bangladesh bowlers at bay for most of the day. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam was the most successful bowler with 3-156 in 47 overs. Mehedi Hasan Miraz picked up 2-165 in 42 overs.

The unbroken seventh wicket stand between Wriddhiman Saha and Ravindra Jadeja took India to 620 for 6 in 153 overs at tea.

143 runs were scored in 32 overs for the loss of two wickets during the post-lunch session. Saha was batting on 83 from 124 balls and Jadeja 16 from 31 when the cricketers left the field for tea.

Bangladesh took the sixth Indian wicket when Mehedi Hasan Miraz sent back R Ashwin for 34 with India at 569 for 6 in 140.3 overs. With Wriddhiman Saha, Ashwin took India past 550 with their 74-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Ashwin played for the turn, pushed at the ball and the thick edge carried to Soumya Sarkar at slip.

Bangladesh picked up the prized scalp of Virat Kohli for 204 during the post-lunch session. Taijul Islam was rewarded for his persistence, and he struck the India captain in front of the stumps when Kohli tried to cut a fullish delivery on off. Kohli didn’t ask for the review, although replays showed he should’ve in hindsight.

Kohli became the first batsman to smash four double-hundreds in four successive series, going past Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid with India at 493 for 4 in 124 overs.

Bangladesh missed several opportunities to pull things back in their favour as India romped to 477 for 4 at lunch.

With 121 runs scored in the morning session for the loss of a wicket, India skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane ensured Bangladesh were on the back foot early. Kohli was batting on 191 from 230 balls with Wriddhiman Saha on 4 when the players left the field for lunch.

The only wicket to fall in the session was taken by Taijul Islam, who unlike his teammates bowled in the right areas more often than not. Bangladesh should have seen the back of Saha, as captain Mushfiqur Rahim missed an easy stumping in the 118th over.

Young Mehedi Hasan Miraz was giving Kohli some problems, and nearly sent back the Indian skipper for 180 in the 11 th over. Kohli was given out by the on-field umpire with the vociferous lbw appeal from the bowler and fielders. India captain went for the review, and replays showed the ball would have missed the stumps in its projected path. The Hyderabad crowd gave out a loud cheer when they saw Kohli’s review was successful.

Bangladesh nearly had the wicket of Rahane in the 101st over bowled by Kamrul Islam Rabbi when the batter was on 62. Sabbir Rahman made a terrific effort to reach the ball at deep point, but the ball dropped inches short of his fingers.

Bangladesh got their first breakthrough of the second day when Taijul Islam sent back Ajinkya Rahane for 82 with India at 456 for 4 in 114 overs. The fourth wicket partnership between Rahane and Virat Kohli produced 222 runs in 49.5 overs, and both of them literally toyed with the bowlers, and captain Mushfiqur Rahim’s field placings.

Taijul got one to turn and bounce, enticed Rahane for a drive away from his body. Mehedi rushed to his left and his full-length dive gave Bangladesh a much needed wicket.

Earlier, overnight centurion Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane looked to take India into a commanding position early on the second day.

Kohli brought up his 150 with a beautifully executed pull shot off a short ball from Taskin Ahmed, and the in-form batter kept on piercing the gaps almost at will to the horror of Bangladesh fans glued to the television screen.

India skipper Virat Kohli started day-2 on 112, and quickly asserted himself on the Bangladesh bowlers with some cracking boundaries to get things going. Rahane reached his fifty with a four, and both of them were alert to anything loose from the visitors while settling down at the crease.

The fourth wicket stand between Kohli and Rahane stood at 201 with India at 435 for 3 after 105.3 overs.
