Rules for Judges: Govt to issue notification next week

A gazette notification on the disciplinary rules for the lower court judges might be issued next week, Law Minister Anisul Huq said yesterday.

“As far as I know, the disciplinary rules have been forwarded from the prime minister's office to the president on Thursday for his approval. I hope the gazette notification on the rules will be published next week,” he said.

The minister was talking to reporters after attending the 32nd annual conference of Bangladesh Ain Samity at Dhaka University's Science Annex Bhaban yesterday.

The law ministry last month finalised the disciplinary rules in line with article 116 of the constitution, which allows the president to control the lower court judges' postings, promotions and leaves in consultation with the Supreme Court.

The ministry on November 30 sent the rules to the Prime Minister's Office, said law ministry sources.

Earlier on December 3, the SC gave time to the government till December 10 for issuing the gazette notification.

The apex court also deferred the hearing till December 10 on the Masdar Hossain case, known as the judiciary separation case, which is linked to the issuance of the gazette notification.

The SC has so far given time to the government for 27 times for issuing the gazette notification.

Anisul yesterday said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a law student at Dhaka University.

Unfortunately, the university had expelled him as he played an important role in the movement for realising the rightful demands of grade-IV employees.

The minister added that the DU later withdrew the expulsion order.

Justice Mirza Hussain Haider of the Appellate Division of the SC and DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman spoke at the event presided over by AKM Afzal Ul Munir, president of Bangladesh Ain Samity.
