‘Drug dealer’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

An alleged drug dealer was killed in a “gunfight” between law enforcers and his cohorts in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar yesterday.

Teknaf police had arrested Mohammad Aziz, 24, son of Saleh Ahmed of Dailpara in the upazila, at his home on Saturday night, law enforcers said.

As per the information given by him, police took him on a drive at Maheshkhali Noughat around 12:30am, said Officer-in-Charge Pradip Kumar Das of Teknaf Police Station.

As soon as they reached the spot, cohorts of Aziz started firing on the team, forcing the police to retaliate, said the OC, adding that Aziz tried to flee from custody during the attack.

After the “gunfight”, Aziz was found shot and lying on the ground, OC Pradip claimed.

He was taken to Teknaf Health Complex and was later moved to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where he died.

Police recovered a gun, seven bullets, and 3,000 yaba pills from the spot, police said, adding that three policemen were also injured during the incident.

Meanwhile, a bullet-hit body of an unidentified man, aged around 35, was found on Marine Drive Road in the district yesterday morning.

Being informed by the locals, police recovered the body, said Mohammad Alamgir, in-charge of Himchhari police camp.

The victim, wearing blood-stained clothes, had bullet wounds on his chest and waist, he said, adding that the body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
